Party system institutionalization has strong bearing on political accountability, the decisiveness of elections, the time horizon of political actors, and on a host of other factors that are related to the quality of representative democracy. The lecture has two distinct components, based on two papers written together with Fernando Casal Bertoa. One of the papers analyzes party system institutionalization in Eastern Central Europe while the other suggests a new operationalization of party system closure, a central aspect of party system institutionalization. The focus will be on the predictability of party relations, on the politics of party blocs, and on the difference between electoral stability and party-elite stability.
